Tooth decay is now the number one reason for hospital admissions among young children. Recent data have revealed a 10 per cent increase in children requiring hospital based tooth extractions due to tooth decay in the last four years.
The key is to understand that tooth decay is totally preventable - largely by limiting sugary food and drink and making sure children visit the dentist regularly, as well as brush their teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
The British Dental Association have been leading calls to the Government to take radical action to lower the nation's sugar intake, with measures ranging from lowering the recommended daily allowance, through to action on marketing, labelling and sales taxes.
